Stances

Poem from my ancient chapbook "Living Alone Without a Dictionary" (U of Queensland) shaved down to Part 1 and revised.

For Carter Monroe:

STANCES

stances being road maps
better to travel without directions
no rush to a party that is always
occurring round the corners
the way may be found and lost
by chance and only because
each tree has been passed
before and finally recognized
will you know no roads
but if you had a map think
would you see the animal
dragging its slow eyes
after you the one run over
by your wheels?
